Breaking Out of Depression

Depression is a common experience that many people face at some point in their life. It often comes with a thread of symptoms that impacts MOOD (difficulties with concentration, focus, negative thoughts, impaired memory); EMOTION (irritability, guilt, shame, overwhelm, sadness, despair, numbness); PHYSICAL (extreme fatigue, low energy, headaches, changes in appetite and sleep); BEHAVIORAL (isolation, withdrawal, lack of personal hygiene, unhealthy coping mechanisms).

Sometimes depression can be challenging to manage, but it can also be an opportunity for growth and transformation. Many view depression as a call to action, an invitation to look inward and address unresolved issues or traumas. Understanding the root causes of depression can be helpful because it allows for healing on a deeper level.

However, most people who are experiencing depression don’t want to think about what needs to happen over time for change to take root. Instead, they’d prefer to change how they’re feeling now. Such as clear action steps that will provide relief.

Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for relief from depression. Committing to something that can pave the way to healing is the first step . . .

FIVE ACTIONS STEPS to build motivation for healing:

  1. Start small and celebrate your progress.

  2. Break tasks down into smaller steps to make them feel more manageable.

  3. Establish a daily routine that includes self-care activities.

  4. Connect with positive and supportive people who can lift you up.

  5. Take care of yourself by getting enough sleep, eating well, and staying active.

The importance of self-care, such as regular movement of your body, mindful food choices, good sleep regime, journaling, meditation and/or other mindfulness practices, are ideas for a daily practice that can assist in managing depression.

With effort and a whole-hearted commitment to place YOURSELF first, it is possible to overcome depression and find greater meaning and joy in life.

Remember, it's okay to take things one step at a time. You've got this!
